Peter Nichols returns

J Blakeman 13.07.2016

Peter Nichols a club stalwart of the 1980’s and 1990’s has returned to Broomfield after an absence of 18 years.

Aged 32 he took up the game at Broomfield joining fellow steel salesmen Chris Price, Peter Darby, Barry Griffiths, Nigel Francis and Mark Hadley. He made his W&W Premier debut along with Peter Hargrave in 1983 in an away fixture at the Gun Barrells in Division 7. Pete was Club Captain for three seasons between 1990 and 1992 culminating in promotion to Premier Division 2 for the first time in the clubs history. He featured in the clubs first three seasons in Premier Division 1 (1996-1998) before moving to the George B.C. where he had reached the semi finals of the Masters in 1995.

A prolific winner of club competitions which started with the Chairman’s Shield in 1985, Nichols went on to win both the Club Championship (1990, 1995, 1998) and Club Handicap (1987, 1989, 1995) each on three occasions.  He achieved doubles success in 1988 capturing the Oldbury Pairs with Roy Freeman and the Billy Purcell Club Pairs with Steve Blakeman.

Having last competed some 15 years ago during his short spell at the George B.C. (1999-2001) Pete is now contemplating a return to the game. His short term intention is to practice the green at Portland Road and enter some club competitions which this season includes the resurrected Chairmans Shield.

During his recent visits Pete confirmed the Broomfield club is still very close to his heart. Pete has returned as a full member and we would like to welcome him back to the fold. Thanks also go on record for the kind donation he has made to the club. Those who know him well believe it won’t be too long before he returns to competitive action.
