Of the ten campaigns at Portland Road, Broomfield closed the 2010’s with a season void of silverware - an unfortunate footnote to such an eventful decade. As in 2018, club honours were restricted to the Smethwick ‘A’ side who finished Division 1 runners up to Moor Lane for the third consecutive season. This was the sixth time the club were reduced to a sole runners-up honour but with two relegations and two eighth-place finishes 2019 was statistically the worst on record since 1971 when the club fielded just an Oldbury and Harborne team in its third season of competitive bowling.
The new and returning members bolstered numbers but collectively only made 56 appearances: Richard Dandy (30), Amy Dandy (4), James Dugmore (9), Luke Fagan (1), Dave Griffiths (3) and Leigh-anne Wilson (9). 40 players were used, above the ten-year average (37.5) but by the close of the season the club depended heavily on 30-32 players to fulfil the 72 weekly places.
Ollie Newman again set the standard with an 84% win rate from his 68 ‘A’ games. An eighteen-game unbeaten run helped him to the Oldbury ‘A’ club averages for the thirteenth time and the league averages a sixth. His aggregate of +214 beat the previous Oldbury ‘A’ record (+202) set by Paul Freeman in 2001. Ollie won the Warwick & Worcester ‘A’ averages for the tenth time taking his tally of ‘A’ team club averages to 37.
So near yet so far - The story of the season belonged to the Warwick & Worcester ‘A’ team. The table will show that the team finished fifth for the second year running but the highs and lows made the 42nd campaign one to savour. Having started the season with two wins from seven and sitting one place off the foot of the table the team strung together nine wins from ten to head into the final game of the season with promotion to the Premier division still possible. Ultimately it wasn’t to be as Ward End Cons ‘A’ inflicted the teams worst result (-101) since June 2007 (-119). The season highs included three away wins and two Portland Road milestones - the 100th home game (+110) and twelve winners at home for the first time (+109).
