2018 was Broomfield B.C.’s 50th season in the Oldbury & District Bowling League where competitive bowling started for the club back in 1969. The Saturday teams competed in a reformed Warwick & Worcester setup with ‘Premier’ and ‘Alliance’ now known as ‘A’ and ‘B’ in one matrix of divisions. A Dudley ‘B’ team was resurrected for the first time since 2011 meaning five midweek teams were fielded for the first time since 1998.

Team honours were restricted to the Smethwick ‘A’ team who as in 2017 finished runners up to Moor Lane in Division 1. They went one better in the S.F.Jones Challenge Trophy extending the record to eight cup wins and a first since 2009. Most teams held static league positions for the latter stages of the season:

          Warwick & Worcester ‘A’ – 5th (last 8 games)

          Warwick & Worcester ‘B’ – 7th (last 6 games)

          Smethwick ‘A’ – 2nd (last 6 games)

          Smethwick ‘B’ – 10th (last 8 games)

          Oldbury ‘A’ – 3rd (last 6 games)

          Dudley ‘A’ – 4th (3rd-5th for 21/22 games)

The membership (49) and players used (42) were both slightly down on 2017 but remained high in comparison to previous seasons at Portland Road. A further four beginners joined the club in Adam Griffiths, Josh Newman, Bethany Bonner and Nathan Davis who between them clocked up over 100 games in their first season of crown green bowls. In the opposite direction two long serving Broomfield bowlers departed in Keith Underhill (33 seasons 1985-2017) and Terry Jones (22 seasons 1996-2017).  Joe Wilson missed out on topping the appearance list by one game but remains one of the clubs most utilised players having clocked up a staggering 861 appearances since taking up the game in 2008.

Ollie Newman resumed his position at the top of various rankings having been restricted to 30 games in 2017. He picked up three of the four ‘A’ team averages as in 2016 taking his tally of Warwick & Worcester ‘A’, Oldbury ‘A’ and Smethwick ‘A’ team average wins to an unrivalled 35. Ollie also won the Oldbury Division 1 league averages for the fifth time.

Personal milestones were again aplenty, none more so than Chris Price who became only the sixth post-war player to clock up forty seasons for Broomfield. In addition…

Joe Wilson (861) passed 800 appearances for Broomfield

          John Wilson (754) passed 700

          Chris Chilton (637) passed 600

Joe Wilson and Jonathan Blakeman (both 352) each passed 350 home appearances at Portland Road

Chris Price (276), John Hardman (263) and Ollie Newman (261) all passed 250 Portland Road appearances

Tonia Hadley and Denise Killion (both 209) became the first players to make 200 appearances in the Dudley League

Miscellaneous statistics included a record thirty home defeats and an overall win percentage of 47% from the clubs 187 league and cup matches. There were no 21-0 wins recorded for the first time since 2014 but six cards of 21-1, two of which by James Tudge.
