2017 marked the clubs 40th season in the Warwickshire & Worcestershire C.B.A. with both Premier and Alliance teams winning Division 3. For the W&W Premier it continued the trend of bouncing back from Division 2 relegation at the first time of asking (2009, 2012, 2015, 2017).
The Smethwick ‘A’ team recorded its lowest points total (16) since 1993 yet finished Division 1 Runners Up with only two points separating 2nd place and bottom of the table. The Oldbury ‘A’ finished 4th in Division 1 yet won more league games than any other team helped by 11 wins from the final 13 matches. The Dudley team sealed back to back promotions winning Division 4 with Mark Hadley, John Hardman and Keith Underhill combining to win 43 of the 47 games they played. Tonia Hadley extended her Dudley League appearance record to 190 having featured in the very first season back in 2001. The Oldbury ‘B’ rotated a squad of 12 players and ended the season on a high with a credible performance in the final of the Oldbury Division 3 & 4 Knockout Cup. ‘A’ games (84) and ‘B’ games (82) were evenly split in 2017 although the balance will shift in 2018 with the introduction of a Dudley ‘B’ team.
The membership increased to a healthy 53 with 46 players. 44 players featured – the highest since 2008 when the club still fielded a 60+ team. During July 35 players were competing for the 24 available Saturday places. There were Broomfield debuts for Mark Mason, Lisa Griffiths, Claire Hentrich, Terry Williams, Darren Hamblett, James Williams and Adam Watts. In the opposite direction five Saturday players were lost over the course of the season in Sam Fagan, James Dugmore, Paul Hentrich, James Tudge and Mark Hadley. Another feature of 2017 was availability with Dave Griffiths (13 matches), Paul Newman (19), Ollie Newman (30) and Terry Jones (32) all restricted to certain periods of the playing season.
Joe Wilson (85 games) topped the appearance list for the 5th time in the last six seasons and has now played 80 or more matches in seven of his ten seasons for Broomfield. Joe featured in all 84 ‘A’ games and capitalised on the absence of Ollie Newman, collecting three of the four ‘A’ team averages.
There were two undefeated players amongst the average winners. James Tudge (12/12) for the Oldbury ‘B’ team in only his second season and Keith Underhill (22/22) for the W&W Alliance, his aggregate of +284 only the third time a Broomfield player has surpassed +200. Three 21-0 wins were recorded (James Dugmore, Mark Hadley, Darren Hamblett) – the most in a season since 2010 when three were recorded on Portland Road and one on the original Broomfield green.
Personal milestones were a plenty:
The 2018 season will see Broomfield compete in its highest W&W standard since 2014, coupled with the league restructure to 10 teams in a Division. It will provide a good indication of how far the club has recovered since that season when both the Premier and Alliance teams could only muster 5 wins apiece. 2018 will also mark 50 seasons in the Oldbury League and 20 years since the Oldbury League and Cup double.
