08/10/16 - End of season roundup: On Saturday 24th September 14 members turned out for the Janice Freeman Club Handicap. In the first round she defeated fellow Oldbury 'B' team mate Sam Fagan (Receive 4) 21-11, in the quarter final Danielle beat James Dugmore (Owe 2) 21-13. Another Oldbury 'B' encounter in the semi final beating Manjeet Panesar 21-18 as both players started with 5 on the card. In the bottom half of the draw Darren Griffiths, a three time winner of the competition (1994, 1996, 1998) made it to the final with wins against Jim Watkin (27-13), John Hardman (27-22) and Paul Hentrich (27-10). On Saturday 1st October the finals of the Mick Bagnall Trophy (formerly the Deers Leap Open) took place on the greens of M&B and Broomfield B.C. Rain fell throughout the whole of the days play but the greens remained playable and a familiar visitor to finals day finally clinched the title. Carl Fielding who appeared in the first finals day back in 1988 was making a record 14th finals day appearance. A runner up in 2007, losing semi finalist in 2003, 2010 and 2013 and losing quarter finalist in 1996, 2005 and 2011 went the full distance in this years competition. In the first round Carl trailed former Broomfield bowler Marc Wilson 19-12 on the Broomfield green and would edge a good quality game 21-20. From the last 16 onwards all of Carl's games were on the M&B green and he started with a 21-14 win over Dave Clarke. In the quarter final Simon Totten was beat 21-10. The semi finals were played in the worst of the weather and Carl made it to the final with a 21-12 victory over Gareth Herbert courtesy of a 16-2 lead. Elliott McGuninness made it to the final with wins over Mark Denman (21-11), James Seville (21-19), Ryan Prosser (21-8) and Jason McLoughlin (21-11). Carl was never behind in the final although 'Bodger' did recover from 9-16 to 15-16. Final score Carl Fielding (Greville Arms) 21, Elliott McGuinness (George) 17.

The final league game of the season was completed on Sunday 2nd October. Ollie Newman's Smethwick 'A' team faced Greets Green at home in what was a sixth re-arranged fixture of the 16 game season. Third place in Division 1 was already confirmed. The match was won by 60 shots with six winning cards: Terry Jones 21-5, Jonathan Blakeman 21-6, Steve Blakeman 21-10, Ollie Newman 21-11, Chris Price 21-11 and Joe Wilson 21-19.

For the first time since 1999 the Chairmans Shield made a return as a club competition, played on the afternoon of Sunday 2nd October. Congratulations to Paul Hentrich winning his first club competition in only his second full season of playing bowls. Paul beat Ben Chapman 21-14 in the final. Congratulations must also go to Ben in his first season who made it to the final with wins of 21-5 in the quarter final and 21-10 in the semi final.
