23/09/05 - In his first season for the senior citizen team, Frank Newman has set a new club record. He won 16 of the 17 games he played in the Oldbury & District Senior Division 2 and finished with a plus of 186.
Site news; 'Timeline' and 'Roll Of Honour' added to the Years Gone By section. All final averages and tables now available. History and Honours sections updated / amended.
Yesterday saw the finish to the W&W season with Broomfield losing away at The Bell by 47 shots. Three winners, all in the back four; Tony Rowley 21-20, Keith Lawlor 21-11 and Matt Barnwell 21-13. A special mention to the "Newman" family who all lost 11 on the day... Paul, Frank and Ollie! Although still not confirmed, we look likely to finish in top spot after gaining a 6 point lead over the Richmond. Nigel Freeman won the averages with a plus of 134 and 30 points.
11/09/05 - Another piece of silverware added to this seasons success when our Smethwick 'B' side won away today by 19 shots on Netherton Cons. Congratulations to Denise Killion and her side on a swift return to Division 2. Best cards - Matt Barnwell 21-9 and Andy Calvert 21-10. Still one fixture left but the league is won and Matt Barnwell wins the averages, currently with a plus of 124 and 30 points. The Smethwick 'A' side beat The Gate at home by 51 shots with 7 winners. To win the league we will have to win away from home next week in the reverse fixture. Best cards today were Mark Hadley 21-2 and Chris Price 21-10.
09/09/05 - We are sad to announce that Fred Price passed away peacefully on Wednesday. Fred had been a member of Broomfield for at least 40 years and put more into our section than most. He transformed an old stable which was used as a machinery store into what we now use as our bowls pavillion. He and his wife spent years maintaining the bowls areas surrounds and up until the mid 1990's he still played for us on a Saturday. Details of the funeral are on the club notice board.
07/09/05 - An away win for the Oldbury side tonight was only enough to finish runners up in Division 1 to the George 'A' who had 7 winners on West Bromwich Labour. Broomfield had 4 winners on The Wernley and won by 18 shots (Nigel Freeman 21-5 , Ian Tew 21-8 , Chris Price 21-13 , Paul Newman 21-16). Nigel Freeman pipped Ollie Newman to the averages with a plus of 134 and 30 points.
The West Bromwich side also completed their fixtures tonight. A loss by 46 shots on Wednesbury Cons sees us finish mid table after an early season home defeat. Two points were collected tonight after 21-18 wins from Tonia Hadley and Keith Underhill. Jon Blakeman won the averages with a plus of 69 and 22 points
06/09/05 - Tonight the semi-final of the Free Press Cup was played against Woodfield. An 86 shot loss away put an end to any hopes of playing The George in the final (Chris Price 3-21 , Chris Thompson 4-21 , John Jones 7-21 , Mark Hadley 4-21 , Tony Rowley 13-21 & Frank Newman 9-21). At home we were winning by 38 shots but with no need to continue, Ian Tew conceded his game at 18-11 up. Other results at home were; Ollie Newman 21-7 , Paul Newman 21-20 , Mick Barnwell 20-21 , Matt Barnwell 21-18 and Nigel Freeman 21-8. It means the official result was a 59 shot loss. Woodfield play The George in the final for the 5th year running.
04/09/05 - The W&W Premier side won at home yesterday, they beat New Inns Four Oaks by 58 shots. Nigel Freeman, Ollie Newman and Chris Price all winning 21-6. The Richmond lost at The Bell which means a home win next Saturday secures us as division 2 champions. Before the game yesterday the final of The Janice Freeman Handicap Cup was played. Nigel Freeman beat Keith Lawlor 25-15. It means Nigel has won both the championship and handicap for the second year running.
The W&W Alliance side ended their season on a high, winning at Lea Hall by 65 shots. John Hardman, Jon Blakeman, Sam Fagan, Marc Hadley jnr and Frank Newman all with single figure wins. The team ended with 17 wins out of 20, 41 points and an aggregate of +1496. Jon Blakeman won the league averages with a plus of 173 while 7 others also finished the season with a plus of 100 or more.
02/09/05 - This week the three midweek sides all played their final home games. The West Bromwich side had 5 winners, they have enough points to ensure division 1 status next year. The Oldbury side had 8 winners, closing the gap to 4 points between us and The George 'A'. It means the Oldbury side end the season looking for an away win at The Wernley, while we hope West Bromwich Labour have a good home win against The George 'A'. The Dudley side had 6 winners last night but ended as runners-up of Division 4 after holding 1st place for 20 weeks.
