28/08/11 - Three winners for the Smethwick 'B' this morning at Woodman Saltwells, losing the match by 27 shots: Marc Hadley Jnr 21-11, Tonia Hadley 21-17 and Matt Barnwell 21-18.

A heavily depleted Smethwick 'A' team took on the Beeches 'A' at Langley in the semi final of the S.F.Jones Cup. Just two winners on another poor surface as Broomfield lost by 13 shots. Wins for Chris Chilton 21-5 and John Wilson 21-8. Thanks passed on from the captain Ollie Newman who is away on holiday to all those that came in to represent the club (Frank Newman, Malcolm Spencer, John Hardman). Focus now switches to the league, Broomfield play Moor Lane home and away and the Beeches 'A' drew at home to Boldmere S&S this morning and end their season next week away in the return fixture.

27/08/11 - Division 3 now looms for the W&W Premier team after another home defeat. This time to the Valley by 6 shots. The team were missing Darren Griffiths, Ollie Newman, Marc Wilson and Chris Price but it was pleasing to see an improved atmosphere compared to the Ward End Cons home loss. Heavy rain was around on Thursday, Friday and Saturday but the green took this well and the two teams played out a very competitive match.

Broomfield were 13 shots ahead after four with wins for Dan Chilton 21-6, John Wilson 21-17 and Terry Jones 21-18. 26 shots dropped in the middle four saw the difference reversed with the Valley now 13 shots up heading into the back four. One winner for Broomfield in the middle four with Cameron Gurdas winning his first W&W Premier game (21-17) on his return to the side.

The game did seem out of reach with the back four in play but Joe Wilson ran out from 12-15 to win 21-15 on debut and Andy Calvert clawed back to 10 when trailing 3-20. Jonathan Blakeman won 21-8 which left Chris Chilton on the green 12-15 needing to run out to win the match. Chris ended up with 20 with Broomfield losing by 6 shots.

Many thanks to those that supported the team on the day, most of which also helped with marking cards (Alan Parsons, Denise Killion, Malcolm Spencer, Steve Barnwell) and those that came in to make the side up (Cameron Gurdas, Matt Barnwell, Steve Blakeman, Joe Wilson). A difficult day and not the result we wanted - but not through lack of trying. Next Saturdays fixture at the Greyhound is now a must win.

25/08/11 - A chance of survival in Division 2 for the Dudley 'A' after an 8 point win against Rowley Labour. Winning cards by Denise Killion 21-9, Nigel Francis 21-12, Joe Wilson 21-15, John Wilson 21-16, Cameron Gurdas 21-20 and Frank Newman 21-20.

A first for Broomfield in the Dudley league tonight with the Dudley 'B' having all 8 winners away from home. Broomfield played Swindon and this was the first time the two clubs have met. 11 points and a 63 shot win: John Hardman 21-6, Darren Griffiths 21-9, Melissa Gurdas 21-12, Jonathan Blakeman 21-12, Pauline Broadhead 21-14, Dan Chilton 21-15, Steve Blakeman 21-17 and Dave Childs 21-20.

24/08/11 - With a runners up place possible in Division 1 it was dissapointing that the away fixture to Coombswood was played on one of the worst surfaces seen this season. From my own records this was the worst result recorded by the Oldbury ("A"). John Wilson was the only winner (21-20) as Broomfield lost by 87 shots. Meanwhile WBFS gained 9 points which means third place will be played out between Broomfield and M&B.

The West Bromwich team had four winners at home against Rowley Labour and won by 5 shots. Malcolm Spencer made it six wins running (21-8) and was joined by Terry Jones 21-6, Matt Barnwell 21-17 and Marc Hadley Jnr 21-17. In the final game away at Rowley Labour, Broomfield will need three winners to finish in third place.

22/08/11 - During tonights committee we decided to change the date of the quiz to Saturday 24th September. This will now follow the final W&W fixtures.

21/08/11 - The Janice Freeman Club Handicap was retained by Jonathan Blakeman who beat Terry Jones 24-14, Marc Hadley Jnr 24-13, Denise Killion 24-9 and Dan Chilton 24-18. Dan's route to the final consisted of a bye and then wins against Danielle Newman and Dave Childs.

20/08/11 - Four winners for the W&W Premier team who lost by 22 shots away at the Valley. Wins for Dan Chilton 21-10, Andy Calvert 21-12, Terry Jones 21-14 and Mark Hadley Snr 21-20.

Ten winners for the W&W Alliance who beat the Valley by 85 shots at home. Single figure wins for Steve Blakeman 21-5, Jim Watkin 21-6, Keith Lawlor 21-7 and Alan Parsons 21-7.

19/08/11 - Congratulations to John Hardman who today won the West Bromwich Individual Veterans Merit.

18/08/11 - One winner for the Dudley 'A' (John Wilson 21-11) who lost by 68 shots away to Hilly House. Six winners for the Dudley 'B' who beat Somers 'B' by 58 shots at home: Melissa Gurdas 21-2, Steve Blakeman 21-6, Jonathan Blakeman 21-10, Carl Blakeman 21-11, John Hardman 21-12 and Dave Childs 21-17.

17/08/11 - No game for the Oldbury team tonight and two winners for the West Bromwich team who lost by 27 shots on West Brom Labour. Malcolm Spencer 21-12 and Keith Underhill 21-18 maintained their good form as the team look for a 3rd placed finish in Division 1.

09/08/11 - An entertaining club pairs took place on Sunday. Click here to read the report and view photos and two video clips. Thank you to the 20 players who entered making it one of the better club competitions in recent years. Congratulations to Darren Griffiths and Jim Watkin who beat Ollie Newman and Matt Barnwell 21-12 in the final.

05/08/11 - The Janice Freeman Club Handicap will now take place on Sunday 21st August. The change has been made because the Smethwick 'A' team have both a morning and afternoon (league and then cup semi final) game on Sunday 28th August. No league games take place on the 21st which will hopefully improve the chances of a good turnout. Club Pairs take place this Sunday (7th August). Please support these Club Competitions, some of which have been running for 90 years. If anything it is a chance to learn more about our new home green.

05/08/11 - Apologies and a correction to Chris Price who won the Club Championship aged 67, not aged 64 as originally published. The question has been asked is "Herman" the oldest player to win the Championship? This is impossible to confirm with the competition first played in 1921 when many of the players would have been aged 50 and over. You would need to go back to the mid 1960's to find a player that may have been a similar age.

04/08/11 - A small piece of history tonight as the Dudley 'B' team became the first Broomfield team to record a victory of 100 shots or more on the Portland Road green. The game against Kingswinford Cons started well with wins for John Hardman 21-4 and Karen Newman 21-3 who ran out from 3-0 down. Dave Childs 21-13 and Danielle Newman 21-13 completed the first four to put the home team 51 shots up on the board. Next off was Steve Blakeman 21-1 who was playing his first game for Broomfield since 2006. Two more single figure wins extended the lead to 101 - Melissa Gurdas 21-7 and Darren Griffiths 21-5. It left Pauline Broadhead on the green 18-11 down but she came back (10-1) to win 21-19. 8 winners, 10 points and an aggregate of 103.

One winner for the Dudley 'A' side (Nigel Francis 21-19) losing by 42 shots at Sedgley Ex's.

03/08/11 - Second placed W.B.F.S travelled to Portland Road to take on Broomfield in the Oldbury league. One of the better games this season with a good atmosphere and some competitive games. After the first four Broomfield were seven shots in front and had clocked up three points with wins for Jonathan Blakeman 21-15, Mark Hadley Snr 21-15 and Dan Chilton 21-17. The Supporters were never out of the match and with Mike Hill 12-1 in front of Chris Price it was time to again grind out a result on the Portland Road green. Paul Newman came off winning 21-8 and he was followed by brother Ollie who had beaten Alan Bentley 21-15. Chris Price showed the sort of spirit that won him the Club Championship last Saturday and won 21-17. The final result was a 28 shot victory but more importantly 8 points were gained. A strong finish could see us pinch a runners up spot which would be our best finish in the Oldbury league since 2006. Wherever the team finish it is good to see that the top eight are still competing without the Broomfield green.

The West Bromwich side kept up the good work with a third away win of the season on W.B.F.S. An impressive 20 shot win and 8 points. Three 21-7's on the spin for "The Pope" Malcolm Spencer and also wins for Alan Parsons 21-7, Matt Barnwell 21-14, Marc Hadley Jnr 21-14 and John Hardman 21-19.
