12/06/17 - Chairmans Shield - TJ secures 4th Club Comp - Eight entries made for a perfect knockout in yesterdays Chairmans Shield. The club competition which was resurrected last year after a 17 year absence is open to members who have not participated in any ‘A’ team games. Five of the eight entries had less than two years experience and they were joined by the current holder Paul Hentrich, Danielle Newman holder of the Club Handicap and Terry Jones who had played his first game of the season earlier the same day.

Round one included James Williams’ first ever competitive game, losing out 21-5 to last year’s runner up Ben Chapman. Paul Hentrich progressed to the semi finals with a 21-15 win over Danielle Newman. Terry Jones beat James Tudge 21-13 but it was not one way traffic with the score at 8-8 and James finding some good bowls throughout his game. Claire Hentrich and James Faulkner-Jones enjoyed an evenly matched encounter with JFJ securing a 21-17 win to meet brother Paul in the semi final.

Terry Jones stepped his game up to win his semi final against Ben Chapman 21-9. Paul Hentrich also looked like sealing a single figure card at 16-8 before James briefly recovered to 16-13 and 18-15. Final score 21-15 to Paul.

Paul Hentrich now in his fourth season for Broomfield was looking to retain the Chairmans Shield, a feat last achieved by Darren Griffiths (1995-1996). Terry Jones with 159 W&W Premier appearances started the final as the favourite in a club competition he first entered in 1997. The final which lasted 32 ends was one of good quality with no more than a 3 shot lead for either player. Level at 3-3, 5-5, 7-7, 12-12, 14-14 it was Terry who won the final two ends of the match from 19-18 to clinch the trophy.

Congratulations to all those involved, a good afternoons bowling with matches being played in good spirits. Terry becomes the 9th Broomfield bowler to have won the Club Pairs, Club Handicap, Club Championship and Chairmans Shield.
