14/04/13 - A win by the narrowest of margins for the Smethwick 'A' team this morning as they faced Beeches 'A' at Portland Road. Four winners each with Broomfield winning the match by 3 shots: Jonathan Blakeman 21-13, Mick Barnwell 21-16, Chris Price 21-18 and Chris Chilton 21-18 who was last on the green. The Smethwick 'B' team had three winners away at Cradley Heath Libs but lost the match by 14 shots: Joe Wilson, Andy Calvert and Mark Hadley Snr all winning 21-13 (5 of the 8 matches were 21-13).
13/04/13 - The Warwick & Worcester season started today as the rain came down from 2:00pm right through to the final end of the game. Broomfield welcomed Ward End Cons to Portland Road. Two years ago Ward End Cons recorded an 18 shot victory in this fixture with winners shared six a piece. Today was Joe Wilson's first match as captain, Broomfield's 14th in their 36 seasons in the Warwick & Worcester.
The first four looked shaky after the opening 15 minutes with three cards well down. Joe Wilson was the first card off with a 21-13 win. Mark Hadley Snr recovered superbly to win his match 21-19 whilst Chris Price 20-21 and John Wilson 19-21 battled to ensure Broomfield held a 7 shot lead after the first four. Four winners in the middle four but all had to work hard to increase the lead by 17 shots to +24. Wins for Keith Lawlor 21-15, Paul Newman 21-16, Dan Chilton 21-20 and Dave Chilton 21-16 in his 100th W&W Premier outing for Broomfield. A further three winners in the back four and only a couple of shots dropped saw Broomfield record a 52 shot victory: Jonathan Blakeman 21-5, Mick Barnwell 21-13 and Chris Chilton 21-15.
A positive start for the first team in what will no doubt be a testing season. It's only one game in but Broomfield sit 4th in W&W Premier 2 for the first time since 29/05/2010 - a significant date in that it was the day we left Broomfield (Smethwick Cricket Club) and recorded a 1 shot win away at West Bromwich Labour. Elsewhere in Premier 2 on the opening day Royal Oak and Tanworth In Arden recorded away wins at New Inn (WCWMC) and the Valley respectively.

Nine winners, three of which were single figures: Darren Griffiths 21-4, Jim Watkin 21-5 and John Wilson 21-9. Thank you to Peter Sankey, Andy Dugmore and Dave Southall for helping us to field a team.

01/04/13 - We are sad to announce the passing of former Broomfield bowler Chris Mullis. 'Musher' also had spells with Smethwick Ex's and Lightwoods but will mostly be remembered for his years at Broomfield which covered a 25-year span from the mid 1970's to the late 1990's. Chris was our very first Smethwick Sunday Morning captain when the league formed in 1976. He played in Broomfield's first season in the Warwick & Worcester in 1978 and was part of the league winning teams in 1980 (Premier 10) and 1982 (Premier 8). In his final spell at Broomfield Chris played for Dave Jones in the W&W Alliance and was part of the Division 2 winning side in 1997 and Division 1 Runners Up in 1998. 'Musher' spent his final years living in Blackpool and had battled cancer. His father Bill and son Chris also played for the club.
