23/03/14 - Next Saturday (29th March) a round robin tournament takes place on the Portland Road greens in memory of Graham Gilbert and Adam Rose. Mitchells & Butlers Bowling Club are providing a trophy and it is hoped that the competition will take place every season. Please note this is an individual competition starting at 1:00pm. A good turnout would result in the group games being 11-up. The format for the later stages of the competition will be decided on the day.
23/03/14 - All 2014 league fixtures now available on this website.
22/03/14 - Congratulations to Ollie Newman who today became the first Broomfield bowler to qualify for the finals of the Tony Pagett Open. 04/03/14 - An update from Alan Parsons in Western Australia:
I’m playing for a club called Safety Bay Bowls Club. The club has 4 full size synthetic greens and a membership of over 600. Website www.bowlssafetybay.com.au. I did edit the club magazine “The Penguin Post” for a short time but work got in the way (too busy) – the 3 editions I did are under Penguin Post on the website if you’d like a peek.
The club puts out 4 teams in the WA Pennant bowling leagues on Thursdays (12 players per team 3 x 4 man rinks – 48 players total) and 4 teams on Saturday (16 players per team 4 x 4 man rinks – 64 players total). Places in the teams are at a premium but I am manager of the Division 4 (white) team. I’m playing quite well but it’s difficult to move up because of historical teams and there being so many players of a similar standard. All matches consist of 21 ends played up and down. With 16 bowls per end it takes 3-4 hours to play a game – it’s a bit tough in the heat.
There are club competitions every Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The Thursday and Saturday competitions give the guys, not picked for pennants, the chance to play competitively.
We actually had a whole Saturday program called off by Bowls WA a couple of weeks ago due to it being too hot. It reached 45ºC – anything over 40 is classed as too dangerous to play – now there’s a novelty - None called off for rain though!!!!
Clubs also hold carnivals or open competitions on bank holidays or out of season. They usually run for a couple of days and you play 4-6 matches over the carnival. The picture below show me and three mates (in Safety Bay regalia) at Rockingham Bowling Club carnival last weekend.
Re the Fancy dress – you have to wear WA authorised Club uniform for all matches played during the pennant season – I can imagine some of the Broomfield lads in this get up.
Pass on my regards to everyone and let them know I’m still alive. Emails welcome or texts/calls. Its great to hear from home. I’m back for 3 weeks on June 19th. – look forward to seeing you all then.
01/03/14 - Thanks to all those that placed orders for club shirts, Mark Hadley has confirmed 33 was the final total.
