FEBRUARY 2014 NEWS

Items listed below are news items that have appeared on the Home Page but may now be out of date...

26/02/14 - The 2014 calendar is now online with all available information to date. Emailed to members tonight and available as a PDF document upon request. Still waiting on a few bits of information including Dudley and Smethwick merits. Club Competition dates to be confirmed at the next committee meeting.

25/02/14 - Reminder - please ensure orders for club shirts are with Mark Hadley by the end of the week.

21/02/14 - Warwick & Worcester fixtures are now available. The Premier side open the season with a trip to the Greyhound on 5th April. The Alliance season (Division 2) starts on 26th April with the Baldwin at home. Three 'free' Saturdays this year: 19th April (Easter), 7th June (W&W Individual Merit Prelims) and 26th July (BCGBA Senior Individual Merit).

20/02/14 - Dave Jenkins is now part of the clan: W&W16644. We don't think he had any intentions of playing at present but this was also the case for our current club captain who only took up the game in 2008!

17/02/14 - As first thought, the 2014 season will start with Smethwick S.F.Jones Cup preliminary rounds on Sunday 30th March. The Smethwick League programme will commence the following Sunday (6th April). Division 1 consists of 10 teams again with Royal Oak 'A' and Coombswood 'A' gaining promotion. Broomfield 'B' will again compete in a 9-team Division 2. Hilly House have resigned from the league. The 'B' team will see new fixtures in 2014 including Langley 'A', Cradley Sports, Tallboats, Pheasant and Wernley 'A'. The league programme will finish on Sunday 7th September with cup finals being played on Sunday 28th September.

15/02/14 - The clubs Twitter feed will appear on the website homepage (see right hand side) this season. We currently have 17 current or former players who follow our Twitter account. By having the feed on the website will mean everybody can view match results as they become available. Twitter was trialed in 2011 and re-introduced in 2013 to help promote the All England.

15/02/14 - Player profiles have been updated to include stats from the 2013 season, comps/averages won in 2013 and positions being held in 2014. Congratulations to Frank Newman and Keith Underhill who will both enter their 30th season for Broomfield in 2014. Four players are likely to complete 500 games for the club this season with Dave Chilton on 489, John Wilson 478, Chris Chilton 452 and Joe Wilson 427. Player profiles can be accessed from the members area of the website.

12/02/14 - Work parties continue to take place every weekend since members were emailed some weeks ago. As you can imagine with the constant wet weather we are having to take advantage of every available opportunity. Saturday's between 10am and 2pm have been the best attended with thanks to Frank Newman, Sheila Newman, Joe Wilson, Darren Griffiths, Chris Price, John Hardman and Pauline Broadhead for all your hard work so far.

11/02/14 - New club shirts are being ordered for the 2014 season. Thanks to sponsorship from Stock Services the price per shirt will be £12. Shirts will be navy blue with the Broomfield crest on the front and a Stock Services logo on the sleeve. The order will be placed on 28/02/2014 at the latest to ensure delivery by the end of March. If you wish to order please email Mark Hadley with size and quantity required. Orders will not be accepted after 28/02/2014.

Sizes available: XS (36"), S (38"), M (40"), L (42/44"), XL (46"), 2XL (48"), 3XL (50/52").

10/02/14 - A reminder that subs (£30) need to paid by 31/03/2014. Joe Wilson is collecting subs this year although you can pass monies to any member of the committee who will then pass to Joe at the next meeting which takes place on 18/03/2014.

09/02/14 - Following the Dudley AGM last Wednesday a rule change was passed which will see matches start at 7:00pm instead of 6:45pm (the earlier start time still applies to matches at the start and end of seasons).

08/02/14 - Thank you to Ollie Newman for organising this years pre-season event. Ollie has confirmed that the booking for Hall Green Dogs on Saturday 29th March has been made for 25 people. Only three to pay so please get your money to Ollie ASAP.

05/02/14 - The demolition of the social club will commence at the end of February and become a cleared site by the end of March. The new pavilion will then be built with an estimated completion set for the end of July. A temporary toilet block will be provided by Persimmon Homes in time for the first league match and will remain on site until the new building is fully operational.

We will still provide food after our league games but this will be served at the Smethwick Conservative Club approximately 1.2 miles from our green. The venue will also be used to hold committee meetings. We will not have to become members of the club and reduced prices have been offered to us for Saturdays as follows: Mild £2.02, Bitter £2.06, Lager £2.33 and Guinness £2.37. Use of the snooker tables will also be available.

Smethwick Conservative Club is situated less than half a mile from "Old Broomfield" and has been used by us previously to hold committee meetings. Despite the fact our current green is 350 yards outside of the Smethwick border we have always maintained a connection with our Smethwick roots having also held meetings at Smethwick Ex's, the Hollybush Public House, Smethwick Labour Club and the Shireland Public House.

This season Lisa Griffiths will provide food for Oldbury League (Wednesday) and Warwick & Worcester (Saturday) matches. Pauline Broadhead is providing food for Dudley League (Thursday) matches and Terry Jones is c/o the Summit League (Monday) food.

02/02/14 - Oldbury League starts on Wednesday 16th April. Broomfield's first fixture is away to the Old Cross 'A'. No byes this season and following the Old Cross fixtures we will go on to play (in order) Netherton Cons 'A', Langley, Hilly House, George 'A', Coombswood 'A', Beeches 'A', W.B.F.S.C. , M&B 'A', George 'B' and Royal Oak 'A'.

01/02/14 - Dudley & District (Thursday) Division 5 confirmed as follows for 2014: Langley 'B', Old Cross 'B', Broomfield, Rowley Labour, Wernley 'A', Cradley Sports, Pensnett Social 'A', Coseley Tavern 'B', Somers 'B', Penn and Wernley 'B'. Season starts on Thursday 10th April.
