Items listed below are news items that have appeared on the Home Page but may now be out of date...
29/01/15 - An update from last nights Warwick & Worcester C.B.A. AGM - The fixtures secretary confirmed that Broomfield's application to join W&W Business Houses Division 2 had been accepted following the resignation of Moor Lane B.C. Fixtures for the 2015 season are due for release towards the end of February.
Chris Price, who became the first Broomfield member to sit on the W&W committee in 2007 added two further firsts last night - he became the Association Secretary replacing Steve Miller and was also made a Vice President of the WWCBA.
27/01/15 - The second Graham Gilbert & Adam Rose Memorial competition will take place on the greens of M&B and Broomfield on Saturday 4th April. The round robin format is likely to continue. To improve on last years competition all names are likely to be entered into the same pool meaning players could be drawn on either green. Last season both Darren Griffiths and Joe Wilson reached the semi finals with Paul Rolls winning the competition. Further details will follow at the start of the season.
23/01/15 - Following the A.G.M. a number of changes have taken place for the 2015 season. Chris Price remains as both our President and Chairman and it will be the 10th time he has held these positions within the club. Jonathan Blakeman continues as Secretary having taken the role on in its entirity towards the end of the 2012 season. Dave Jenkins who came on board as Treasurer last year continues for a second term in 2015. After a two year break Darren Griffiths has returned as Club Captain and will lead the W&W Premier team for the 4th time.
The Warwick & Worcester Business Houses will be a first for Broomfield and Denise Killion will captain the team. John Wilson enters his 10th season for the club and takes on his first role as captain of the Oldbury team. Joe Wilson replaces Terry Jones as captain of the Summit team and John Hardman remains captain of the Dudley team. Jonathan Blakeman takes on the Smethwick 'A' captaincy for the first time whilst Jim Watkin will be captain of the Smethwick 'B' side for a 7th straight season.
Changes on committee see the total number increased from nine to ten members after a proposal was passed at the AGM to accept all six nominations. New faces include John Hardman and Katy Lang and Darren Griffiths returns after a 12 month break. Stepping down from committee are Ollie Newman and Mick Barnwell. Katy Lang takes over the running of the Bonus Ball fundraiser with Sheila Newman stepping down after ten years in the role.
Personal milestones include Mark Hadley and Malcolm Spencer entering their 35th season for the club, Terry Jones 20th and a 10th for Chris Chilton, Dave Chilton and John Wilson. Chris Chilton is 11 games shy of 500 appearances for Broomfield. It will be the 40th season of the Smethwick & District Sunday Morning Bowling League which was founded by Broomfield life member Bill Adams.
21/01/15 - Birthday congratulations are in order for Frank Newman who turns 75 today.
Available records suggest that Frank was with Broomfield as far back as 1979 having previously played for Smethwick Labour B.C. in the Midland Works & Business Houses League. During his first spell with Broomfield he picked up the Smethwick ‘B’ averages in 1982. Although he made no W&W Premier appearances that season he does appear on first team scorecards in the Free Press Consolation Cup. He made his W&W Premier debut for Broomfield in the opening fixture of the 1983 season. In Premier Division 7 away at the Dolphin (Warwick Road, Acocks Green) Frank beat M.Kington 21-14. An unfortunate piece of trivia for Frank is that he was the first Broomfield player to score nil in the W&W Premier – a match he can still recall today that took place on the Raven in 1983. In 1985 Frank won his only individual club competition when he defeated Peter Hargrave in the final of the Ken Wharton Club Handicap. Part way through the 1986 season Frank along with son Paul moved to the Gate B.C. Rood End.
Frank's W&W Premier debut 30/04/1983 and his unfortunate piece of "history" in June of the same year.
Frank enjoyed six full seasons at the Gate all of which were in W&W Premier Division 2 and he returned to Broomfield in 1993. Broomfield were now in Division 2 for the first time in their history whilst the Gate had slipped into Division 3. His son Paul also returned in 1993 followed by Ollie in 1995 and daughter Denise in 1997.
1995 saw “Spike” take on the position of Secretary, a role he would fulfil for five straight seasons until 1999. In 1995 he won the William Purcell Club Pairs with Paul Gaynham and also shared the Arse Of The Year trophy. Partnered by daughter Denise in 1996 he won the Oldbury League Roy Freeman Mixed Doubles. He closed out the 1990’s winning the Smethwick ‘B’ averages in 1998 and 1999. The 1990’s were a fruitful period for Broomfield and Frank was part of the successful team that maintained a W&W Premier Division 1 status between 1996 and 2000. In 1998 he was part of the Oldbury League and Cup winning team and in 2000 played in the Free Press Cup final victory over Woodfield at Churchfield Tavern B.C.
Turning 60 in 2000 he showed no signs of slowing down and took on the Oldbury ‘A’ captaincy for four seasons, leading Broomfield’s top eight to a Division 1 runners up spot on two occasions. With daughter-in-law Karen he lost in the final of the Club Pairs in 2000. The Ray Law Club Person Of The Year was awarded to Frank in 2002. The Smethwick ‘B’ averages were again secured in 2002 and 2003.
The Oldbury Seniors team received a wakeup call when straight talking Spike joined the team in 2005. Winning the averages in 2005 and 2006, his first season deserves a mention with 16 wins from 17 games and a plus of 186. Broomfield’s last season with a seniors team was 2008 and the records show F.Newman Snr as (2005-2008) Played 71, Won 54, +446. During this period Broomfield achieved another Oldbury League double – Division 1 Champions and Cup Winners in 2007, a first for the Seniors.
In 2006 Frank again took on the role of Secretary in addition to the West Bromwich captaincy for the first time. A second Club Pairs was won in 2006 with Nigel Freeman, with 30 entries it remains the best turnout in a club competition in recent history. For active service over many years Frank was made a Life Member in October 2007. That season his roles included Secretary, Club Captain and head green keeper. 2012 was Frank’s last term as Secretary and when he resigned from the position it signalled the end of 22 years in which only he and Mark Hadley had held the role. 2012 also served as his final year on committee having completed more than 15 terms since 1994.
In addition to his playing achievements and administrative responsibilities Frank along with his wife Sheila have put endless hours into the upkeep of the surrounds at both Broomfield and Portland Road. From the mid 1990’s to 2006 he helped Steve Blakeman by cutting the green in the week and as recent as the All England preparations in the summer of 2013 he was still putting the hours in around the green. On a comic note he has held the Arse Of The Year award a record four times (1995, 2003, 2010, 2012) – most recently after purchasing a “Sister” card by mistake for Sheila’s birthday.
In March 2013 Frank and Sheila celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary and at a surprise meal attended by Broomfield bowlers he was more than chuffed to see former player Peter Gwilt amongst the guests. At the end of the 2013 season it was decided to rename the Club Pairs after Frank and Sheila as a mark of thanks for their many years of active service at Broomfield. The new trophy was presented to them at the 2013 prize presentation at the Edgbaston Palace.
At 75 “Spike” still plays his part at Broomfield and has clocked up 410 games in the last ten seasons. His record at Portland Road stands at 36 wins from 66 games. An estimated c.345 appearances for the W&W Premier team places him 6th on the all time list with sons Ollie (c.400) and Paul (c.350) both above him.
Many happy returns "Spike" from your many friends at Broomfield B.C.
17/01/15 - The A.G.M. takes place next Tuesday at the new pavilion, 7:15pm for a prompt 7:30pm. The nominations received over the past month suggest that all but one position will be filled immediately. Several players have turned down the offer to captain the Oldbury team including the 2014 captain Ollie Newman, Mick Barnwell, Mark Hadley and Terry Jones. On the basis that it is unlikely that the new Oldbury captain will want to take a position on the committee, we will be looking to elect five of six committee member nominations to take the committee to its full quota of nine.
Following the committee meeting held last Thursday it was decided that membership forms will be completed by players at the AGM to establish availability and accurate contact details. One of the items added to the A.G.M. agenda is midweek selection as we will need to establish a way of remaining competitive, suiting player availablilty whilst also ensuring players get at least one game a week.
15/01/15 - Summit League fixtures for the 2015 season are now available at http://web.staffspbl.com/ For Broomfield the season starts away to Selly Park 'B' on Monday 13th April and ends away to Woodfield 'B' on Monday 24th August. We will face a new team in "The Rag" in April and May who are based in Rawnsley (WS12 0QD). Division 2 will have a more local feel in 2015 with trips to Langley, Moor Lane, Sutton Park and Ward End Cons.
15/01/15 - 2015 season nominations below. A captain for the Oldbury team will need to be elected at the A.G.M.
07/01/15 - A reminder that the final committee meeting for the current committee takes place on Thursday 15th January 2015 at Edgbaston Foundation Community Sports Ground, Portland Road. The meeting starts at 7:00pm. To attend: Chris Price (President, Chairman), Jonathan Blakeman (Secretary, Greenkeeper), Dave Jenkins (Treasurer), Joe Wilson (Club Captain), Ollie Newman (Oldbury Captain), Denise Killion (Committee Member), Mark Hadley (Committee Member), Paul Jackson (Committee Member) and Mick Barnwell (Committee Member).
04/01/15 - Individual player records for "Broomfield at Portland Road" have now been updated to include the 2014 season. 13 players have now clocked up over 100 games on Portland Road since relocating to our new home venue part way through the 2010 season. Joe Wilson tops the appearance list with 191 games whilst Ollie Newman's 126 wins from 145 games gives him an 87% win percentage. 53 players have represented Broomfield at Portland Road.
03/01/15 - The Dudley League Archive has been updated to include the 2013 and 2014 seasons. Tonia Hadley (141 matches) has moved above Terry Jones (139) having made the most appearances since we joined the league in 2001.
01/01/15 - 2015 will bring about another new chapter for Broomfield Bowling Club. The coming season will be our first as tenants of Warwickshire County Cricket Club with our home venue now named the Edgbaston Foundation Community Sports Ground. The end of May 2015 will mark five years since we relocated from the 'Broomfield' ground at Smethwick Cricket Club. The website will have been online for a decade on 28th August 2015.
