JAN & FEB 2010 NEWS
Items listed below are news items that have appeared on the Home Page but may now be out of date...
21/02/10 - With snow putting the work on the green on hold again, a start was made today on some of the tasks indoors. We have removed the fire place from the kitchen creating some much needed space for the fridges. Mark Hadley will be buying the paint this week (at discount thanks to MJ!) which will be used on the toilets and kitchen.
Compared to last season we are now a week behind with the green but still plan to open it one week earlier than last year. Much of this now depends on how much help we get with the work parties.
Presentation takes place on Saturday 27th February at The Abbey Hotel, Hither Green Lane, Dagnell End Road, Redditch, Worcestershire, B98 9BE. Hoping to post details on booking in times, time of the meal, presentation etc but waiting on an email for the details.
15/02/10 - Smethwick AGM held tonight. Our 'A' and 'B' sides must remain squaded for the season (the question was raised about this during the meeting). S.F.Jones cup draw also took place (Broomfield 'A' the current holders). The 'A' side were drawn in the preliminary round vs Dartmouth 'A' at Coombswood on Sunday 2nd May. The 'B' team don't play until round 1 vs Greyhound on Sunday 30th May - venue to be decided after the prelim round is complete.
Smethwick captains need to use full names on match cards and ensure they are posted to Paul Hickman, not Colin Grove. Cup results need to be phoned through to Colin Grove but also followed up by a match card. Fines are being issued by the league this season for late cards.
14/02/10 - During a W&W meeting at Lea Hall today it was decided not to change the Alliance fixtures. A new 29 day cancellation rule has been introduced.
Work Parties have been arranged for Saturday 6th March and Saturday 13th March - your help would be very much appreciated.
With only a couple members without internet access we have decided not to print handbooks this season. All the information will be placed on the website and noticeboards. Printed information will be available for those members who don't have internet access.
07/02/10 - Warwick & Worcester fixtures have now been released. The Alliance team will play a total of 26 matches, starting two weeks before the Premier team on Saturday 3rd April and finishing two weeks after the Premier team on Saturday 2nd October.
Keith Lawlor is trying to finalise the table plan for this years presentation, 44 people will be attending.
02/02/10 - The Tony Pagett Open draw has now been made. Held at Cradley Libs and now a Champion Of Champions qualifying event. Broomfield players feature on the following dates: Saturday 13th March (Morning Session) Ollie Newman vs Maliza Herbert and Mick Barnwell vs Pete Davenport. Sunday 14th March (Morning Session) Marc Wilson vs Stuart Nash. Saturday 20th March (Morning Session) Jonathan Blakeman vs Mick McGuinness. Sunday 21st March (Afternoon Session) Darren Griffiths vs Alan Hill.
01/02/10 - A message from the Treasurer that all fees should be paid by Wednesday 31st March. Men, women and OAP's all pay £20.00 while anyone under 18 pays £5.00. We have not had any details yet regarding cost of membership to the parent club.
31/01/10 - Quiz Night at Broomfield confirmed for Friday 19th March.
30/01/10 - Our application for a second team in the Dudley & District Thursday League was confirmed on Thursday. Broomfield 'B' will form part of the new Division 7 which also includes the Wernley, Londonderry 'B', Pensnett Social 'B', Kingswinford Cons 'B', W.B.F.S.C. 'B', Dudley Sports 'B', Baggeridge 'B', Coseley Athletic 'B' and Somers 'B'.
26/01/10 - The Free Press Cup 2010 was advertised tonight. Now in its 103rd year, prize money will total £1000 in this years competition. Mick Barnwell (Barnwell Services) and Steve Blakeman (Rigby Taylor Ltd) are two of the five sponsors. Full details can be found at www.freepresscup.com
23/01/10 - Foxes seem to have taken a liking to the green recently. The picture below shows two of the four holes we are faced with repairing. The green has been shaping up well in terms of drainage and lack of disease. A shame that this recent damage may still be visible come the start of the season.
18/01/10 - The AGM was attended by 22 members with one new member present (Alan Parsons, White Horse). 10 apologies were rendered with only 6 current members absent from the meeting. Officers, Captains and Committee all remained more or less the same as 2009 with Paul Newman (Club Captain) the only major change.
Paul returns to the role of Club Captain for the 7th time, more than any other Club Captain now surpassing Joe Russell (6 times, 1978 ~ 1983). 'Gaps' was previously Club Captain in 1995, 1996, 1998, 2001, 2002 and 2004. Chris Price enters his 5th year as President, Darren Griffiths a 4th as Chairman, Mark Hadley Secretary for the 12th time while Andy Killion is our Treasurer for the 4th year running.
