As highlighted in the 2015 summary the club competed in a higher overall standard in 2016. This was perhaps reflected in no “A” team honours being achieved for only the fourth time in the past 45 seasons. The clubs win percentage dipped to 53% down from 66% the previous season. 39 players were used compared to 31 in 2015 mainly thanks to the addition of an Oldbury ‘B’ team which introduced three new players to the game and attracted three former players back to the club.

The dynamic of the membership changed with various ins and outs. Most noticeably was the permanent or reduced availability of half of the first team which helped win W&W Premier Division 3 the previous season:

The W&W Premier team finished 10th in Division 2 and were relegated back to Division 3 in the same order as the clubs promoted in 2015 (Broomfield, Kings Norton, Greyhound). As in 2015 there was a considerable points difference between Broomfield and Kings Norton: 37pts v 28pts in 2015 and 19pts vs 12pts in 2016. The W&W Business Houses team followed up 2015’s undefeated season with the Division 1 title at the first attempt. The club has since decided to rejoin the W&W Alliance with the Business Houses only providing our players with 280 individual games over the past two seasons compared with 528 in the W&W Premier.

Our Sunday ‘B’ team gained promotion back to Division 2 finishing their two season spell in Division 3 with a runners up spot in 2016. They also won the Consolation Cup for the first time since 2002 winning five cup matches in the process. The Sunday ‘A’ team finished third in Division 1 with half of the team finishing in the top eight of the league averages.

Having dropped the Division 2 Dudley ‘A’ team in 2011 our Dudley team have spent the last four seasons in Division 5 finishing in third place every season. In 2016 the team won Division 5 outright with a points total of 138 – the highest total since 2003 when the original team last won Division 5.

Ollie Newman won three of the four ‘A’ team averages – the W&W Premier (8th Time), Oldbury ‘A’ (x11) and Smethwick ‘A’ (x13). He also secured an 81.2 win %, the first time he has surpassed 80% since 2009. John Hardman set a new appearance record with 99 games in one season, beating the 95 played by Jonathan Blakeman in 2010. It was the first time since 2011 that Joe Wilson did not top the most number of games category. League averages were won by Malcolm Spencer (Dudley Division 5) and Keith Underhill (W&W Business Houses Division 1).

The Warwick & Worcester senior county team returned to Portland Road as a home county venue for the first time since 1985. It is thought that the use of the old number two green (now the Broomfield green) was a first in terms of a senior county home match. W&W beat Cumbria by 49 shots. Paul Gamsby extended his county appearance record to 165 whilst Elliott McGuinness of the George B.C. made his county debut. The junior county also made use of the Broomfield green in 2016 with trials in April followed by a 92 shot victory over Cheshire in May.

In July members past and present travelled to Llay Miners Welfare Club in Wrexham as a Broomfield bowler qualified for the B.C.G.B.A. Senior Merit Finals for the very first time (more commonly referred to as the ‘All England’).

With the passing of Joe Russell (Club Captain 1978-1983) and Bill Adams (Chairman 1976-1984) in 2016 we said goodbye to two life members who were integral figures each associated with Broomfield Bowling Club for over five decades.

In 2017 the club will need to address challenges at both ends of the playing spectrum where only the winners of W&W Premier Division 3 will gain promotion to Division 2 in 2018 whilst less experienced bowlers will account for nearly 25% of the membership.
