14/03/19 - W&W 2019 Season Preview - Broomfield will start the 2019 campaign on Saturday 6th April with a trip to Triplex where last season we fell short by 35 shots. After the return fixture there is a break for Easter with no fixture taking place on 20th April.

In May there is the rare occurrence of facing West Bromwich Football Supporters Club with the clubs senior W&W teams only facing each other once before back in 1997. The Supporters were relegated last season having enjoyed a nine year stay in the top division. Before the Spring Bank Holiday we also face the Baldwin, our opponents on the final day of the 2018 season. The fixtures between the two clubs have thrown up some exciting results including an away win in 2013 (+15) followed by tight home victories in 2016 (+1) and 2018 (+4).

June starts with The Maggies away, the other club to have been relegated from the Premier Division last season. The home fixture falls on 15th June and no doubt a tough test awaits having not beaten the lads from Hall Green since the move to Portland Road (-18 in 2014 and -5 in 2016). We close out the month of June against the newly formed ‘RASP’ with Royal Austin British Legion amalgamating with Selly Park Tavern which will form the home venue. The match at Selly Park will be a first as no Broomfield Senior/Premier/’A’ team has played at the venue in the W&W.

As we hit the Summer months only one opponent is on the list for July. The Broomies will be looking to stop the run of Boldmere St Michaels who have won every fixture home and away since our relocation in 2010. The run includes our record home defeat of 70 shots in 2014 in addition to home losses of -30 in 2011 and -23 in 2016. This seasons home tie against the Mikes will be our 100th at Portland Road for the ‘A’ side. No fixture falls on the 20th or the 27th.

Two thirds of the way through the season and into August brings our most faced opponents from the Portland Road years, that of the Greyhound. Starting with the away fixture, last time out (2017) a 15-shot defeat but prior to that 28-shot away wins in both 2015 and 2016. In the return match the home record is a solid one with six straight wins since 2011. Either side of the break for the August Bank Holiday we face Sutton Park for the third time in four seasons.

The 2019 season ends as the 2018 one started against Ward End Cons. Honours are even at home with wins for the Cons in 2011 (-14) and 2014 (-17) whilst we faired better in 2013 (+52) and 2018 (+21). Maitland Hall will be the venue for the final day of the season and another milestone in Broomfield’s history as match #850 is clocked up on Saturday 14th September.
